SUV rollovers have become a huge safety issue in the eyes of the governmental crash test safety commissions. SUV rollovers are frequent in a very high percentage of Sport Utility Vehicle involved accidents. Unfortunately, SUV rollovers can create a devastating scene when an accident should have been completely survivable. Serious injury and death are likely to occur in the event of an accident that involves an SUV rollover.

SUV rollovers occur when the Sport Utility Vehicle is unable to maintain a safe center of gravity and it becomes top heavy during a turn or an accident. With a wheelbase too narrow for safe navigation of turns, SUV rollovers often happen when it is least expected. While weather factors can play a role in creating SUV rollovers, most of these accidents occur when the roadways are clear of ice and snow.

In single vehicle crashes, SUV rollovers accounted for 53% of deaths involving SUV single vehicle accidents while small car single vehicle crashes accounted for only about 19%. That’s a huge difference and one that truly has opened the eyes of governmental crash test safety commissions. Smaller Sport Utility Vehicles, the ones with a wheel base of about 100 inches, are much more likely to be involved in a rollover accident. SUV rollovers are a safety issue you must understand; if you aren’t aware, you can’t protect yourself and your passengers, whether they be co-workers riding with you on a commute to work or your children in the backseat heading to soccer practice. The most common and easy way to learn about your particular SUV and the rate of rollover is to read the safety report. However, these reports can be a bit intimidating, presenting you with lots of figures and scientific data, so learning exactly how to read the report is crucial.

The first rollover reports appeared by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in early 2001. Of course, these reports were clouded in controversy, as not every SUV performed well. Companies such as General Motors went on the record as saying that the reports are misleading to consumers, which may have a shade of truth to it, since most people don’t accurately know how to read the entire report.

The most important part of the SUV rollover report is the SSF, which stands for Static Stability Factor. If you majored in physics in college, you probably are nodding your head, but for the rest of us, let me put it into simpler terms: SSF is reports how top-heavy your SUV is. Imagine putting a heavy basket of fruit on top of your head, as you’d try to walk, you’d feel unstable, like you were going to topple over, right? Top heavy means an SUV will be more likely to topple over as well, and so SUV rollovers will be more common.

SSF is a number computed by measuring the center of gravity on the SUV, which is largely due to the track width. Track width is just a fancy way of saying the distance between the tires, and the back tires are always used to keep everyone’s report consistent. Go back to imagining yourself with a basket on your head.

Imagine the result if you if you stand with your feet together versus if you stand with your feet a shoulder width’s apart. You’ll definitely feel more stability with your feet apart, right? The same is true in SUV rollover reports: the farther the tires (feet) are from one another, the more stable the SUV will be and the less likely for SUV rollovers to happen.

In theory, this is a perfect way to determine how likely your SUV is to rollover. That said, there are things that your SUV rollover report isn’t telling you. For instance, the vast majority of SUV rollovers occur when the driver accidentally (or purposely) drives off of the road and a wheel of the SUV hits a ditch, bump, curb, or other change.

The speed you are traveling also makes a difference, and a reaction to running off the road can play into the rollover as well. Would you slam on your brakes or pump the pedal? Would you jerk the wheel to gain control or try to keep steady, would you shift gears? Each of these factors in your own personal situation will help to determine if you will be involved in a rollover or not.

Also, one must take into consideration other safety features of an SUV before buying. When compared to all other vehicles, SUVs are, hands down, the safest in a collision due to their size and build. Use your common sense if you are worried about SUV rollovers. Death occurs largely do to the roof crushing, so of course a less stable roof, found if the roof is removable or has a sunroof, will be more dangerous if you actually get into a rollover situation.

That doesn’t mean that a rollover report is senseless. The rollover report’s SSF should weigh in your mind at least a bit, and can help you to decide between two vehicles if you are truly on the fence. Drive safely and SUV rollovers should never be an issue in the first place. All the safety reports in the world can’t make up for a bad driver.

In general, a lower center of gravity is preferred, because it means that your SUV is less top-heavy and more likely to stay upright when going around curves. You can consider this on the most basic level by simply comparing your SUV to other SUVs on the market. How far apart are the back wheels and how proportionate is the top half to the bottom half? We’ve had an exciting time over the past 12 months in the world of exotic cars. It has all been about sheer power, which does not necessarily make for more exciting driving, nor is more power always more fun.

What stirred it all up was the fact that Bugatti managed to get its Veyron 16.4 exotic car into production. Then, they took it to one of the longest straights on a test track in the world and upped the record to 248 mph. If anyone wants to go faster, they will probably have to go to the Bonneville Salt Flats, which can be quite dodgy.

The record had been held by the Koenigsegg at 242 mph, which just beat the long-standing record held by the McLaren F1 supercar. Bugatti’s efforts caused a few people out there to look for more power. Not surprising, really. For example, Saleen found it could ***** some more power out of its supercharged Ford engine to get 750 bhp, and a speed of about 240 mph from its S7 exotic car. One or two others decided to go for 1,000 bhp, just so they could say their car would do, say, 245 mph – after all, no one could prove that it wouldn’t go that fast! Actually, there are quite a few engines available from tuners that produce 800-1,000 bhp.

Pagani, which is concerned more with overall performance on the roads than out-and-out power produced a more sporty version of the Zonda. This Zonda F has suspension aimed more at the track and 602 bhp as standard. But you can have 650 bhp if you like! The Zonda F is also lighter than the Zonda, so the performance of this exotic car is extraordinary. It is a truly exotic car, a supercar with masses of power at any speed – it does not depend on a turbocharger waking up to get the power – and the handling to match.

More recently, Koenigsegg has produced the CCX. Powered by a twin-supercharged engine producing 806 bhp, this exotic car is more practical than the other Koenigseggs. Koenigsegg says it will do about 245 mph, and all this from an engine based on a 4.7 liter V-8. True, nearly all the parts are different, including the cylinder block and heads, but even so it just shows how much power can be got from a standard production engine, heavily modified, and with twin superchargers.

It has much bigger front and side air intakes to improve cooling, and both the front and rear bumpers meet US crash regs. On top of that it has more headroom than the CCR, and yet is just as fast – and expensive. But that is the way with exotic cars!

Meanwhile Ferrari went its own way and introduced the 599 GTB Fiorano, powered by a 6.0 liter engine able to drive it up to over 200 mph. And this car is a front-engined two-seater with luggage space. Of course, Ferrari has also made a limited edition model, the FXX, intended to help with Ferrari’s development. The FXX has a similar V-12 to the 599 GTB Fiorano, but souped up to 850 bhp! Now that is currently the ultimate exotic car, although it is intended mainly for use on the race tracks.

When you think of luxury cars and SUVs, you are very likely to include Mercedes Benz. Mercedes-Benz originated in the 1880s by two men, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz. They invented the internal combustion engine powered vehicle. Ironically, the two men never knew each other despite their similar work, thus for years, their work in automobiles ran parallel and they also lived in the southwest of Germany. Gottlieb Daimler with the help of his friend, Wilhem Maybach created the four stroke engine in district of Suttgart called Cannstatt. Meanwhile, Karl Benz worked in Mannheim. Later, Daimler now working in Unterturkheim built and raced his cars, this how he came to meet an Austrian dealer- Emil Jellinek, who took an active interest in Daimler’s work that he entered Daimler’s cars into the races of which he won significant amount of. The cars were named Mercedes after Jallinek’s daughter.

Hardships in the automobile industry in the 1920s resulted in the merging of Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz’s companies. In 1926, an official merge resulted in the first production of the first Mercedes cars and trucks.

Since then, with interruptions during the second world war (when their car factory was used to produce weapons of war), the Mercedes Benz cars saw an expansion of this company, with franchises all over the world.
