Car driving often leads to deadly accidents. You may be driving safely with your seat belts on, but you never know whats awaiting after a couple of minutes. Instead, if one possess a car, an auto insurance is must for him. However, there are many auto insurance companies that provide services and an auto insurance quote. However, the amount required for coverage varies from state to state. Therefore, you must know the requirement of your coverage of the place where you reside. You can always get your auto insurance adjusted with the help of your coverage limits ,discounted amounts and a proper auto insurance quote as well.

There are many factors that affect the cost of your insurance. The age of the driver, his driving history and the type of car are some of those factors that might heavily affect the price of your auto insurance. If you wish you can combine your car insurance policy with your home insurance or renters insurance plan if any. This in fact can serve as an excellent money-saving strategy. You might also be able to crack a deal on all your other insurances including your auto insurance. Whichever plan you are going for, its important for you to know the auto insurance quote and then finalize the deal.

Auto insurance discounts along with an auto insurance quote are provided to students, senior citizens and even to retirees. If your car is a new one or you are having a utility vehicle, you will gain more advantage for further discounts. Your eligibility for auto insurance discounts will depend on the number of safety features of your car. For instance, if your car possess anti-lock brakes, anti-theft devices or passive restraint systems, you will be easily eligible for good auto insurance discounts. Auto insurance discounts are applicable for those drivers who have been accident-free for five years. Drivers who are above 55 can also enjoy good discount rates if they take up proper driving classes.

If at any point of your life, you fall a victim to a fatal injury or any serious health issue or rather getting accused for some offense, you can always opt for high risk insurance policies. Now, if your insurance statistician categorizes your circumstance as a high risk one, you can easily get an insurance policy. Nowadays, these high risk insurance policies are getting into business.

So, if you have been uninsured all these days, you can opt for these high risk insurance options that come at extremely low rates. Well, a high risk insurance can never be a permanent solution. For instance, if you are suffering from health problems like diabetes, hypertension etc, they are all recoverable to a certain point, and after this you wont be requiring a high risk insurance. The same goes for the drivers who can take up driving classes and therefore wont be in need of any such policies. Before you go for these high risk insurance policies and schemes, make sure you don’t land up in losses.

Before you get a sound driver and get it set up on your system, it’s essential for you to do a little research on the subject first. If you are like most people encountering errors, you have no idea that frequently the problem stems from one or more damaged drivers. Take a look at this information to learn about a cutting-edge yet easy to use utility that’ll give you the power to locate the exact driver you need.

Click here to get a sound driver now!

We need to clarify one important fact – should you install improper drivers for a peripheral, it might create performance problems and may even cause serious windows errors.

In spite of the fact that some providers of drivers will automatically update their drivers on your pc, many others don’t and you will need to do the updating by yourself. Relaying necessary data between your windows and a component, a driver has a very critical role, as without it you won’t be able to run your assorted peripheral devices. I’m happy to report that there is a new solution on the web that spontaneously seeks out, fixes, and updates nearly every driver you can imagine. You’ll be amazed at the simple process of installing this utility and putting it to use – in about 2 minutes your desired driver or drivers will be new and reliable.

Undeniably, your pc’s drivers are vital elements that need your care, just like the steps you take to manage and safeguard your windows system. This application ‘fills the gaps’ caused by your automatic win updates as at the same time it finds and replaces the various drivers that may be found on your computer. Stay away from any drivers which were obtained from anonymous sites – believe me, you want to steer clear of spyware and malware.

For both speed and safety, a lot of users (like me!) would choose to get a sound driver with a quick and hassle-free utility instead of blindly searching online. Take it from me, if you experience system errors, make the effort to replace your drivers since there are high chances it’ll fix these problems. I always say that seeing is believing, so try this tool out and find out just what it can do for you – there’s so much to gain and nothing to lose. We all notice how computers are getting more and more complex; the downside of this is additional support, time, and money to add to our “to do” lists. Last but not least, in the event your current (perhaps older) computer becomes “temperamental” and has a tendency to generate errors see what new drivers can do for it – this may be all your pc needs.

      Faggio

This is just a little motor scooter, sort of like a moped. It’s kind of fun and quirky, but don’t depend on it for missions or for anything involving combat.
Speed and handling:The Faggio is slow, the slowest motorcycle in the game. Darn thing sounds like it has a small lawnmower engine under the hood, a really high-pitched lawnmower engine. It takes turns decently, but what can you expect when you’re not going very fast? Still, it’s handling is only fair at best.
Locations:Try Santa Maria Beach in Los Santos. Other than that, it’s kind of up in the air. The Faggio usually only appears in cities, but it’s pretty rare even then.

FBI Rancher

The FBI will uses these to hunt you down and gun you down. Normally, it’s not a good thing to see an FBI Rancher in your rear-view mirror.
Speed and handling: One of the fastest vehicles in the game, even able to catch up with the best sports cars. The FBI Rancher bounces around a bit when you hit bumps at high speeds, but it seems to be able to handle it and doesn’t spin you out of control very often. For one of the larger vehicles, it can even take sharp corners pretty easily if you’re adept with your brake controls.
Locations: FBI Ranchers do not just sit around waiting for you to pick them up. No, no. The only way to get one is to get five stars, wait for the FBI to show up, then hope you can jack one of these vehicles from them before they blow you away. It can be done, but it’s not always easy.

FCR-900

The FCR-900 is based upon a Honda, and in San Andreas it comes in three different varieties. One variety includes a windshield, which you can see in the image below. Another option is quite plain, with no windshield. A third option has the windshield as well as some plating along the sides to cover the engine.
Speed and handling: Fast. I mean, really fast. In fact, one of the fastest vehicles in the game and almost the fastest motorcycle in all of San Andreas. But there’s a downside. It’s a little slow on takeoff. And it doesn’t take those sharp corners as well as some of the other sporty bikes. But it’s still a lot of fun.
Locations:Get all silver awards at the bike school in Las Venturas and the FCR-900 is yours, to be found outside the school waiting for you. Otherwise you can find them in any of the cities. The FCR-900 isn’t the most common of motorcycles, but it pops up enough so that it’s not an extremely rare vehicle in the game.

Feltzer

The Feltzer is an all-around dependable vehicle modeled on a Mercedes Benz.
Speed and handling:The Feltzer has pretty good speed, though not quite as good as a sports car. It’s not great for taking sharp, hairpin turns, but it usually doesn’t spin all over the place and go out of control on you. Also, it seems to take a decent amount of damage. Over all, it’s a solid vehicle to be driving in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Locations:When you work on the Import/Export missions, and only then, there will be a Feltzer parked in Flint County near Back O’ Beyond. But otherwise the Feltzer isn’t too hard to find. They’re quite common in San Fierro, and they’ve been known to be driven throughout Las Venturas. I’ve even seen a few Feltzers in the western portion of Los Santos, usually in the more high-end neighborhoods like Rodeo and such.

Firetruck

It’s a Firetruck. What else do you need to know? Oh yeah, you’ll need this big vehicle to do the Firetruck Missions. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, there are two types of firetrucks, one that shoots water from a hose on top and one that doesn’t but has a large ladder on its back. The Firetruck with the ladder is pretty rare, however, though it comes into play in the very last story mission of the game.
Speed and Handling: It might come as a surprise, but the Firetruck actually has really good speed. It’s just a touch slower than I’d like on takeoff, but very soon it can fly right along. The handling is as can be expected, not too great. But what else could such a big vehicle do? The damage a Firetruck can take is monstrous, bordering on the level of a tank or a semi truck, so it can be fun to drive around at high speeds and crash into other vehicles to see them fly around.
Locations:Each city has at least one fire station, and there you can often (but not always) find a Firetruck. In Los Santos, look around the Glen Park district, especially on the South side. For San Fierro, check out Doherty for the fire station. Las Venturas has a fire station between Redsands and Redsands East. The fastest way to get a Firetruck, however, is to start a fire and wait for the firemen to show up. Then all you have to do is steal their truck!

Flash

The Flash is a tiny little vehicle, perhaps the smallest car in the game. It’s based upon a Nissan.
Speed and handling: I love this car! It’s not really a sports car, but it has excellent acceleration and top speed. And it handles like a dream, taking sharp twists and turns with very little of the back end sliding out from under you. The only downside its its durability. The Flash really isn’t any more able to take gunfire or crashes than any average car in San Andreas.
Locations: I see these cruising around San Fierro from time to time, and rarely along The Strip in Las Venturas. On very, very rare occasions I’ve spotted a Flash in the western portions of Los Santos.

Flatbed

The Flatbed is a hefty-sized truck, usually carrying boxes on its back, that looks like something the military might be driving.
Speed and handling: The Flatbed is very slow with its acceleration, but once you get going this puppy really gets going. It doesn’t handle great, though its weight keeps it from spin outing of control and/or turning over. Sharp turns are impossible. Still, the Flatbed can take a lot of damage and is so weighty you can just knock other vehicles out of the way with it.
Locations:Check out the freight depot in Fallen Tree, Flint County, because there is usually a Flatbed being driven around there somewhere. Just about anywhere there is an industrial area (such as docks or construction), you will sometimes find a Flatbed. Prickle Pine and the Hoover Dam areas often spawn the Flatbed, and I’ve seen a few by the airports, especially between the docks and the airport in San Fierro.

Forklift

Except for a mission or two, you don’t really need the Forklift, but it’s there if you want to tool around in it and see what it is capable of. Which is not much other than lifting some boxes.
Speed and handling: As you can guess, this vehicle sucks to drive. Low speed. Low takeoff. Just awful steering. Just about any turn at all will make the Forklift bounce out of your control. It seems to over-correct way to much whenever you try to make a turn. But you can get a little used to it. Still, it’s annoying.
Locations:All the airports in cities will have a Forklift somewhere. There’s also usually one at the Angel Pine saw mill South of San Fierro. The easiest Forklift to find is in a warehouse just to the South of where the Import/Export car drop is located.

Freeway

The Freeway is a pretty common vehicle in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It appears to be a rather plain version of a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Speed and handling: The Freeway is sort of a middle ground motorcycle in the game when it comes to speed. Once you get going it can fly along, but its acceleration is rather slow, at least compared to the sports bikes in the game. The Freeway does not have great handling. You’re not going to be able to make hairpin turns with this thing. The best you can do is kind of slowly bend into a turn. But that doesn’t mean the Freeway is an awful motorcycle, it’s just not one of the best in the game. It will get you where you’re going, and it can be fun to drive.
Locations:If you get all bronze awards at the bike school, a Freeway will appear outside the school in Las Venturas. But you won’t have to wait for that to get a Freeway. Literally, they’re all over the place. I see them often on the roads in the country, and they’re often in the cities, too, though I don’t seem to see them quite as much in downtown Las Venturas as I do San Fierro and Los Santos. Gas stations and truck stop in the country are a favorite place for the Freeway to spawn.

San Francisco is a large metropolitan city with thousands of vehicles on the road at any time. It is inevitable that accidents will happen. In fact, every day there is always a traffic incident being reported in the city. These could be normal car accidents, bus accidents, trucking accidents even pedestrian accidents. In 2009, California had the highest number of fatalities reported nationwide as a result of an automobile accident.
In any case, if there is another party involved in a collision for instance, an auto accident lawyer is needed. This is essential especially if the accident was as a result of recklessness or negligence by either party. Choosing legal representation is an important process to ensure your case is heard and dealt with correctly and to make certain all liability rests with the appropriate wrong doing party.
Regardless of who was at fault, it is imperative to seek professional advice immediately after the fact.
A good case in point was a Californian man who is being sued two years after the incident took place. As a result, it will now make this particular case more difficult to contest with no or very little chance of being able to summons witnesses after such a length of time.
There are many ways to find the best auto accident lawyer San Francisco has available.
One of the best ways to find out about a lawyer is by reference. So if you happen to know anyone who had used the services of a particular auto accident lawyer in San Francisco and they give a glowing recommendation, contact that lawyer straight away.
Other than choosing an auto accident lawyer by reputation, the internet has many search options and websites with detailed information. For example, the California Bar Association has an online search tool that accesses a database of every practicing lawyer in the state. Each lawyer has a professional record that is also made available online. This will help in your search as it will narrow your results down to lawyers in your locality with particular experience in auto accidents. You will even be able to find out a lawyers success history and if there have been complaints against them. This is all important information when assessing the suitability of a potential auto accident lawyer.
When you have assessed your preliminary research and narrowed down to a short list, it is time to make contact for an initial consultation. It is important to meet in person with potential lawyers. You should be able to find out from your first meeting if they are suitable representation for you. The important things to note are full costs and exactly what services the fees cover. Are there additional fees for phone consultations? Etc. In addition, find out if the lawyer is going to inform you fully throughout the entire process and not with hold any information in relation to your case.
After choosing your representation, be prepared to be completely open and honest and provide full details of the reason why you are seeking professional counsel. Lawyers also have the right not to take a case, so they will need as much information from you as well.

You deserve the best representation. We will be an aggressive advocate to protect your rights!
Call us before you choose any other lawyer, we will earn your trust.

In this time of economic depression, people are finding ways to earn extra income on top of their regular jobs. And a lot of people are now turning on Internet Marketing to start their venture on online business. After all, internet marketing is one of the easiest way to set up a business online with little capital or no capital at all. My goal for writing this article is to show you a method of earning at least a day in auto blogging using WordPress and leveraging the products in Amazon.

This method has initial cash outlay but the return of investment is so great and very quick to achieve. What you need to start this business model is a domain and hosting. For domain you can use godaddy.com, and for hosting you can get it from hostgator.com ( I personally use the “baby” hosting package as it allows you to host unlimited websites which is what you will need in this kind of business model). You also need to set up an affiliate account in amazon.com to leverage on the products they are selling. Now this model with allow you to have at least multiple income streams in one blog which I will further explain later.

Once you have signed up as an amazon affiliate, you can go to amazon.com and find a product that is currently “selling” right now. You can choose any product in any categories that you prefer. Go to “movers and shakers” section as this will indicate the hot products in that specific category. Now once you have chosen a product, register a domain name with the product name on the url. Verify also in Google keyword tool if that certain product name has a sufficient searched number. Tip: For best results, include the product name and product model/number in your domain name. If it’s already taken, you can use variations such as hyphen or lines. Example would be: canon-digital-camera.com. You can also use the term review attached to the product name like canondigitalcamerareview. Once you have registered your domain name and hosting, you have to install WordPress as your blogging platform.

If you are not familiar with WordPress installation, do not freak out as there are plenty of WordPress tutorials that you can find online. Just search in google ” WordPress tutorial” and you will find a lot of information on it. You can also search that in YouTube so you can follow along in the video. You can also find a lot of free WordPress theme templates online that you can use for your blog.

Now once your WordPress is set up, you have to install the following plugins in your blog ( and these are free of course): All-in-one SEO ( this is a plugin which will automatically submit your blog to the search engines), Amazon Auto-Poster ( this plugin will automatically get the product details of the product you are promoting from Amazon), Article Auto-Poster ( this plugin will auto post any articles that you have in.txt format and you can schedule when to post these articles), Only-wire auto-poster ( this plugin will automatically submit your article or blog to various socialbookmarking sites in every time you post a new article. Note: You need to first sign up to the different social bookmarking sites if you do not have an account with them yet).

Now you can setup an AdSense in your blog for additional income stream as well. Write at least one original article in your blog based on the product that you are promoting. Just get the article idea from the product description itself and the user comments in Amazon. Highly optimized this with your main keyword. Keyword should be on the title page, and at least mention it for every 100 words. Now you just created a highly optimized WordPress blog that could possibly land you on the first page of Google. Once your site is indexed, you can either leave it as is and let buyers find it through the search engines, or you can sell your site to flippa.com if you want instant cash. A new site like this with no “earnings” yet can sell quickly for – bucks. I know someone who creates 5 auto-blogs a day and sell it to flippa.com after a week ( or as soon as the sites are indexed). Just do your math and you will see that 0 a week is very doable for site flipping these easy to install auto-blogs. Or, you can always opt to keep the blogs and earn naturally from product commissions and AdSense. The choice is all up to you.

What is important in this model is the duplication process. Do not stop with one blog. Create as many auto-blogs as you can and you will also multiple your income on the process.

History
In 2000 Philips’ consumer electronics division (business unit Audio) outlined an ambitious Internet strategy that was remarkably well executed initially: The Streamium brand was invented as well as a “Connected Home” vision. A sizeable number of products was announced, demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show (in Las Vegas, USA) and brought to market in the period between January 2000 and June 2003. In 2003 the “Connected Home” vision would be broadened to embrace the planet in the “Connected Planet” effort. This latest move was accompanied by an attempt to steer product development and industrialization from Eindhoven and to include other business units. Unfortunately, the “Connected Planet” withered, leaving a limited product portfolio of Streamiums.
Products
The FW-i1000, an audio mini-system including a CD-changer and AM/FM radio, and considered to be the precursor to the Streamium product line, first shipped in June 2001. It had been in development by Philips’ audio business group in Sunnyvale (CA, USA) since May 2000. At the January 2001 Consumer Electronics Show they announced and demonstrated the first integrated audio device connecting to “over a thousand internet radio stations”.
The FW-i1000 was rapidly followed by a slew of other IP-enabled devices. The marketing name “Streamium” and the slogan “Don’t dream it, stream-it” was coined and globally registered by Ramon de la Fuente (now at Sonos) who replaced Tony Cher as a product manager in 2001.
January 2001
FW-i1000, with iM-networks service offered by Sonicbox, an aggregator of Internet radio service. A limited number of UPnP compliant prototypes where also made for use in the testing of the UPnP AV specifications.
January 2002
The MCi200, with Philips back-end, several internet based services (and my.philips.com user interface extension protected by a number of patents)
The iPronto, with WiFi/UPnP, links to security camera and offering a web-based electronic program guide a.k.a. EPG.
January 2003
The MCi250, an upgrade to the MCi200 with WiFi and UPnP-compliant
Announced at the same event:
The SL300i and SL400i wireless multi-media adapters
The MX6000i, with WiFi/UPnP, video, pictures and photo service, music services, 5 DVD changer
The Streamium-TV, a 32″ LCD TV offering similar web-based services as the MX6000i
Both the Streamium-TV and MX6000i were capable of offering video content hosted by a web-based service.
August 2004
The WAK3300 wireless music station, with 3 ways to listen to music and 3 different alarm modes.
January 2007
The WACS7000 wireless multiroom music system, the successor of the WACS700, with a 80GB hard disk drive to store up to 1500 CDs.
June 2007
The SLM5500 and SLM5520 wireless multimedia adapters, to stream music from PC as the other Streamium devices but also to view pictures and movies stored on your computer on your TV.
January 2008
The WACS7500 mutliroom music system, the successor of the WACS7500 with color display and access to free Internet radio stations.
April 2008
The WAS6050 wireless music station, with 4 built-in speakers, and access to free Internet Radio stations.
June 2008
The NP1100 network music player, to connect to both a PC and an audio system, with wireless access to Internet radio and online music services such as Rhapsody (online music service) or Napster.
August 2008
The MCI300 wireless micro hifi system
The MCI500H wireless micro hifi system, with a 160GB hard disk drive to store up to 2000 CDs.
November 2008
The NP2500 network music player, following the same principles as the NP1100 but with color display, the FullSound technology to restore the details in compressed music, and picture streaming
The NP2900 network music player, with 4 built-in speakers (no need to connect to an audio system), the LivingSound technology to enjoy immersive music over a wider area and picture streaming.
Architecture
Whereas the FW-i1000 used the iM-networks service (then known as “SonicBox”), the end-to-end “Streamium” system designed by Daniel Meirsman, included a Philips owned back-end service (the “ECD-interface”).
This back-end service allowed Streamium devices to connect to “any number” of web based content delivery services. The back-end would thereby function as a “switch-board” connecting the content delivery services with individual boxes. Moreover, the back-end service would allow Philips to build out an “after-sales” relationship with their customers through the web-based [UI]-extension and would stimulate some early form of web-based social networking with the streamium cafe web site that was set up by Mark Tuttle.
A navigation tree would be served to the Streamium-device from the Philips back-end, whereas the content itself would be directly streamed from the service to the Streamium-box subject to the site’s policy (subject to the compulsory licences…). By manipulating the navigation tree from the front panel of the Streamium-device users could select desired the service, genre, artist, album, track…
From the start, Streamium-devices contained provisions (i.e. an IEEE EUI-64 containing an OUI and a MAC-address, encryption keys, product and software version codes) used to protect streams and support identification mechanisms, as well as allowing downloading of software upgrades (for bug-fixes as well as enabling new features).
In most cases. Streamium functionality was provided by a module (a [PCB]) based on an NXP TriMedia PNX1300. This module implemented:
1. Connectivity to the home network as well as to the Internet (network stack, SAX as opposed to DOM XML-parser, UPnP-stack)
2. Decoding of compressed (audio, image, video) content
A user interface extension was available on the Streamium web-site (my.philips.com) that would allow users to manage their preferences, services and devices.
On the frontpanel or through the on-screen display (OSD) of the Streamium devices, users could mark their favorites or indicate they wanted to learn more about the song being played. The service would then send either an e-mail with more details, or post this info on my.philips.com with a click-through link (i.e. to Amazon.com for purchasing).
Technology Concepts
Under the direction of the Streamium team, Philips CE contributed significantly to both UPnP and Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) and other industry efforts.
The Streamiums were extensively used to build advanced concepts, even at other divisions of Philips such as Philips Semiconductors (now NXP), Philips Research and Philips Medical.
Philips Semiconductors would pick up on the vision of Philips Consumer Electronics and task the “advanced system lab” to prototype this vision (first demos end 2004).
Concepts (such as those used in the Connected Home demos) would then be shown by the Streamium team in the “Philips-CE World Tour”, an invitation only event at the yearly consumer Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to a selected audience.
Demonstration of a portable HDD-based and Wi-Fi enabled UPnP renderer (January 2002) for studies of portable entertainment.
Demonstration of a fully-fledged UPnP enabled network (January 2003) with multiple renderers, servers and control points
Bridging between UPnP and Zigbee was demonstrated to control lighting from a UPnP control point as well as a GPRS link that bridged to the UPnP network through a web server (January 2003), linking digital entertainment to home automation and “ambiance control”.
Use cases illustrating the use of RFID in interactive marketing, identification and personalisation (January 2003).
Tests with the Rhapsody as a UPnP AV-server streaming to an MCi200 (a bit what Sonos is currently offering) (2003).
Running tests of Apple’s Rendezvous protocol on the MCi200 (2003).
The first demonstration of the NFC smart poster concept with Visa (January 2004).
Use cases illustrating interoperable DRM (Streamium was one of the devices used to demonstrate the principles underlying the activities of the Coral consortium (January 2004).
Use cases illustrating the use of recommender technology (January 2004)
Demonstration (~43 use cases) of a fully connected home including stationary as well as portable devices and mobile phones and executed at the “CES2005 World Tour” by a team of professional actors. (January 2005)
Use cases in the area of fitness and well-being (January 2005)
Use cases illustrating uses for UPnP printing (January 2005).
Experiments with Java-based arcade games
Services
iM-networks was offered on the FW-i1000 from the start.
The Philips Streamium MX6000i provided traditional home entertainment alongside access to audio-video content from a PC, UPnP mediaserver or online entertainment service. Services included music videos, Web movies, and cinema trailers.
The Philips Streamium service partners were:
Yahoo LAUNCHcast
Yahoo! Movies – trailers only
MP3.com
Musicmatch Musicmatch Jukebox, Radio MX
live365.com
Radio Free Virgin
Playhouse Radio
Andante
Bluebeat
iFilm – previews and short movies
Launch – music videos
There was no need to first download files to PC, or even to turn the PC on, to stream multimedia Internet content. (A broadband Internet connection is required.)
A wide array of Yahoo! services including on-demand music videos, movie trailers and clips and photo services was launched together with the Streamium range extension in Spring 2004.
Out of the box consumers would have access to free services. Additionally, a number of services would offer premium (subscription-based) online services allowing consumers to broaden and personalize their home entertainment experience.
An early Web2.0 device?
In his press conference during the CES2001, Guy Demuynck, then CEO of Philips CE, expressed his vision that the Internet would become as ubiquitous and accessible as the electric grid to devices other than the PC, and that people would increasingly rely on the Internet for information and entertainment.
“The Internet has transformed the way we do business,” Demuynck stated, referring not only to communications and promotions but to product design as well. “We intend to put Internet capabilities into many products, making Internet content as accessible as pressing a single button on a TV remote. The Internet dominates all our thinkingt will expand from a browsing activity to an always-on, integral part of daily life,” he said.
Innovative
What made the early Internet audio and Streamium devices stand apart from the rest was not only the bold choice for broadband Internet connectivity, but also the fact that Philips provided a back-end service, essentially aggregating an interesting services offering to its users. In addition, a UI extension was offered (my.philips) that allowed consumers to manage their devices, external service subscriptions, favorites, as well as to add their own streams. The PC-based UI extension was part of the lean-forward/lean-backward approach to this potentially complicated product range:
Lean backward functionality was accessible on the device directly
Lean forward functionality was relegated to the PC
In essence, the Philips service offering was a walled garden; but the fact that consumers could add and access their own favorite streams made it more of an open system. Although never published, Streamium relied on an XML-based API –not unlike the APIs we see today published by Web-service providers (YouTube, eBay,…) — and implemented XML-based APIs as offered by its service providers.
Commercial impact
Unfortunately the first Streamium generations lacked support for a number of important media formats such as those included in the Windows Media technologies which hampered their commercial success. Philips’ legal team had issues with the non-assertion clause that Microsoft required potential licensees to sign without prior opportunity to check the IP involved. Since Philips did and still does own a substantial patent-portfolio, product management was not allowed to risk signing away rights on a substantial number of important patents.
Consumer testing
To some extent consumers were involved in some of the design of the Streamiums. Of course, the classical focus test groups were used to find out what features consumers would deem important. But also after the official announcement, a limited number of pre-production versions of the Streamiums would be made available to a limited number of volunteer beta-testers that could sign up via a Philips web-site.
