BMW HISTORY

BMW was founded in 1913 to make aircraft engines, shifting to motorbike production in 1923 and cars in 1929. Its factories were damaged during WWII and machine tools were confiscated by the Allies. BMW gradually recovered and in 1967 bought company Hans Glas GmbH, one of whose plants was to become the largest BMW factory.

BMW bought the Rover Group in 1994, selling MG, Rover & Land Rover in 2000 but retaining the rights to build the new MINI, launched in 2001.

Just hold on a moment and slow down. Of course, a hybrid car is a popular choice right now. And you’re thinking that getting a hybrid vehicle is all about doing your bit about global warming and save money on fuel. It’s a feel-good, win-win situation isn’t it?

But is this true and is that all there is to it? Well, let’s just say that there are at least seven good reasons why you should not buy a hybrid car.

Do you need a hybrid car?

Have you thought about your purpose of using a car at all? Who, and how many passengers will be using the car? Driving in the city or in the country? Perhaps public transport, a bicycle or an electric scooter could fit your needs just as well.

Just because we’re all used to the comfort of our air-conditioned boxes on wheels does not necessarily mean we need to continue the habit, does it? You don’t really need a car, hybrid or other? Then the best thing you can do for the environment, and for your pocket, is not to buy one.

Would your hybrid hold its value?

OK, so you know that hybrid car prices are above average but are inevitably coming down with a rapidly increasing demand. You also know that any tax incentives that may apply now may not continue forever. What does that mean? It means that you will not be able to sell your car at a premium price later, even though resale value is good now. So if you buy a hybrid because you think it will hold its value, don’t count on that being true in five year’s time.

Getting your money back by saving on fuel?

This depends on your mileage and the model hybrid. Even in the best scenarios you will need five years before you recoup your purchase price. Don’t buy a hybrid for economic reasons only.

What are your alternatives?

Hybrid car technology is only one means of saving the environment and your money. Cars that drive on liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or natural liquid gas (NLG) do this too. Modern diesel vehicles run much cleaner than older models and biodiesel fuel is emerging rapidly as an alternative, not to mention ethanol blends.

So, if you cannot justify buying a hybrid car compared to what’s locally available to you in alternative fuels, don’t buy one.

Mechanical assistance?

Many mechanics are not yet trained in maintaining a hybrid vehicle. Could you get yours repaired and maintained locally?

Hybrids ain’t hybrids

The hybrid car range includes SUVs. How many people really need one? Buying a hybrid to roll over the off-road environment seems a little incongruous. Don’t buy one unless you absolutely cannot do without it for good reasons.

Saving the environment?

You are probably like most people who buy a hybrid car because they want to do their bit about global warming. Right? Good for you. Hybrid cars are part of the future. But…

You cannot buy a sustainable world. Selling cars, whatever fuel they use, involves vast quantities of energy and emissions in mining metals, transportation, production and distribution. Whereas it is better to drive a hybrid car than a gasoline-driven one, don’t expect to save the planet from global warming just by doing that.

It’s a change in thinking that’s needed, from seeing ourselves as independent consumers, to interdependent people who live in relationship to others and our environments. Once you and I know that we’ll act more wisely in choosing Earth-friendly technologies that we really need.

As a side note I did try to help him by explaining, in a no start condition you either have no fuel or no spark (or rarely no air). The young man explained he was getting plenty of fuel. But he was not.

So $1,850 later he was motoring again. And to let you know step 1 on the diagnostic tree chart was an in-depth procedure with pictures for checking for fuel delivery. How can I improve my gas mileage? I have been asking myself that question for a long time now. We have all had a good old moan every time that the price of gas has risen when we have gone to fill up, and like me most of us have just accepted it and done nothing about it. Now with the ever increasing price of oil, and with little sign of a drop in the price of gas at the pumps, it seems even more important to find ways to increase gas mileage.

So just how can I improve my gas mileage? and what are the main things about the way I drive that would cause low gas mileage? Well I have done a bit of research and have come up with a few simple ways to increase gas mileage just by improving my driving technique. They are only small things and most are just common sense, things like finding the optimum speed for gas mileage, and keeping my car and its engine regularly serviced, but all these little things together can add up and give you some real gas mileage improvements.

First of all fast driving and good gas mileage just do not go together, the faster you drive the more gas you use, and everyone knows that. But did you know that a car travelling at 80mph can use up to twice the amount of gas as a car travelling at 30mph. For most cars a cruising speed of around 50mph will give you significant gas mileage improvements. So you could say that “fifty is thrifty.”

Another of the ways to increase gas mileage is the way we drive when it come to climbing a hill, try not to stay in a high gear for too long, this not only puts a strain on your engine it also uses more gas. Whenever possible try to build up enough speed before you reach the hill, this way you will have the momentum to climb the hill at a constant speed without having to keep changing down and revving the engine. Don’t try coasting down a hill in neutral or with the ignition switched off to try to save on gas, not only is it dangerous as you do not have full control of the car it is also illegal and any fuel saving is negligible.

If you have a vehicle with a manual gearbox then changing gear at the right time can also give you good gas mileage improvements. Always accelerate gently and smoothly and try to change gear at between 2000 and 3000 rpm, the engine speed at which most cars run efficiently. If you have an automatic gearbox then always drive with the lever in the “drive” position as an automatic will sense for itself when to change gear economically. If you do need to override the gearbox manually then select the low or intermediate position rather than use the “kick-down” as this too increases gas consumption.

These are just a few simple ways to increase gas mileage, and added together you should be able to notice a drop in your gas consumption and so save a few dollars at the pumps. But while I was looking for ways to increase gas mileage I read about something that could give even better gas mileage improvements. With the new HHO gas mileage devices available you could cut your gas bill by 35% or more so I think that I will be doing a lot more research on this for a while.

Chevrolet is one of the most loved automakers in the market. One of its vehicles that were definitely liked by the public was the Beretta. Chevy fanatics were left hanging because of the vehicle’s disappearance after just a few periods on sale.

What could be the reason behind the vehicle’s disappearance?

In 1988 Chevrolet unleashed a more fuel efficient vehicle through a small two door coupe – the Chevy Beretta. There were 6 different models that Chevrolet made throughout the Beretta’s life cycle: the base model, GT, GTU, GTZ, Z26, and the very rare Indy.

On its first existence, the Chevy Beretta has two engines. There was the 4 cylinder 2.0L engine. For better acceleration, the Beretta has an optional a 2.8L V6 with a manual transmission.

As the traditional era evolved into a high tech one, the exterior of the coupe changed. But was what greatly noticed was the huge improvement in the vehicle’s under car parts. From 2.0 to 2.2, the cheaper 4 cylinders even grew more in size to 2.3. The V6 lines of engines used the popular 3.1L that delivered over 140hp.

From 1988-89, the GTU special Beretta Model went on sale. With the colors black, white, and red, the GTU had stiffer suspension and was capable of 0.92 G on the skid pad.

Produced from 1990-1993, the GTZ was the high-performance Beretta. Standard on this vehicle was the Oldsmobile’s 2.3L High Output Quad 4. This produced 180 hp (134 kW) and 160 ft•lbf (217 N•m) of torque. The Getrag 5-speed manual transmission and GM’s FE7 performance suspension were also included in the list of standard equipments.

With more refined Chevy Beretta parts, the vehicle in 1994 came with an optional 3100 series engine, a more powerful one. Though the said engine seemed to be enough for such a light car, it was not still enough for the Beretta manufacturing team. They manufactured the Quad Four which had 4 cylinders that pumps out over 210hp. However, the Chevy fans were in dismay because the innovation was made only in limited quantity.

In 1990, the Indy was manufactured. It featured excellent looking ground effects, more eye appealing style with striking exteriors. It was generally a good looking sports car. It had the colors of bright Sun Fire Yellow and Turquoise, and it offered a convertible as an option. However, the Chevy fans, for the second time, were kept hanging. Only 3 convertible yellow Indy’s were produced and sold in the market.

Due to two major factors, in 1996, Chevrolet halted the production of the Beretta. The first reason was that the competition for rights over the name brand ‘Beretta’ was being lost to a gun corporation in Germany. The second reason was that the Beretta definitely cost high due to the limited quantities, short lifespan with rare models and Quad 4 option.

About Chevrolet Beretta

A front wheel drive coupe, the Chevrolet Beretta was produced from 1987 through 1996 by the General Motors’ Chevrolet division. It was built based on the GM L platform in Wilmington, Delaware and Linden, New Jersey. Among its family members based on the platform are the Chevrolet Corsica and the Pontiac Tempest sedan, which was only sold in Canada. The Beretta was engineered in the same design studio as the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette Chevrolet – in Exterior Studio 3.

The sales of the Berettas continuously declined every year of production as its fans did not seem to appreciate the two-door models anymore. And in 1996, Chevrolet ended production of both the Beretta and Corsica.

The Corsica would be replaced by the 1997 Chevrolet Malibu. But the Beretta had no replacement.

Hybrids combine gas engines with electric motors. You don’t need to plug your car in at night, and you get terrific mileage, averaging from 40 to 60 miles per gallon for passenger cars, such as the Toyota Prius or Honda Civic hybrid.

Ever curious how exactly hybrid cars became the economic revelation they are today? Well, it definitely didn’t start in the 1990s, that’s for sure. In fact, alternative-fuel vehicles and transportation were being developed as far back as 1665, which Flemish inventors used to experiment with steam-power in order to power unmanned cars, and, moving forward to the 1700s, steam-powered carriages.

For the most part, though, these were small developments, and it wasn’t until nearly 1900, in 1898, that the first real hybrid car made its grand debut. Although there are conflicting views as to which hybrid came first, the actual hybrid car developed by Porsche utilized a similar engine as in conventional vehicles today to rotate a generator that would power electric motors, located in the actual car wheel’s hubs. This particular Porsche was able to travel to nearly 40 miles simply utilizing the power in the battery pack before it had to quit, and by 1899, two more hybrids had appeared in Paris, at the city’s Salon.

In the earlier years of the twentieth century, there were thousands of hybrid and electric cars being produced and showcased. It seemed that electric and hybrid cars would be the way to travel, and in 1900, the “voiturette,” the first of these hybrids, was made by Pieper and was very similar to the hybrids we already know. The only difference was most likely in the exterior. After all, the French didn’t necessarily have flames painted along the car and spinners on the rims. For this particular hybrid, the purpose of the battery was to help the car in making its way up hills, and while the car was cruising, the battery would recharge itself. There was even a reliability test in 1902 to see which would fare better, a hybrid, or steam-powered or gas-powered vehicles.

But, then, at some point around the 1920s, hybrids suddenly vanished from the public eye, as if they had never existed. Why and how did that happen?

The answer to that is two words: Henry Ford. Ford’s Model T was not only gas-powered, but his production utilized the assembly line, which made these cars much faster to produce, and easier to do so. Regardless of Ford’s later influence, though, in 1905, H. Piper, an engineer, was hoping to patent his own hybrid vehicle that would use an electric motor along with a gas-powered engine. Even in 1905, someone had thought of the hybrids we would use today. The problem was finding the support needed.

There were also hybrid trucks that were used from 1910 to 1918, and still, hybrid cars offered in 1916 could still reach 48 miles to the gallon, although speeds were much lower. Still, efficiency-wise, the hybrid from 1916 was better than the vast majority of conventional and hybrid cars on the market.

Unfortunately, any plans for hybrids were dropped in the 1920s when Ford’s Model T flooded the automobile market. From 1920 to 1965, there was simply no chance for hybrids to develop. Then, in 1969, GM began to experiment with hybrid cars again, and the next thirty years would be filled with tireless efforts of scientists, inventors, and engineers to help create a fast, eco-friendly hybrid.

Finally, in 1997, manufacturers Toyota and Audi premiered their hybrid cars to mixed reactions. The vehicles were hardly flawless, so it took some time to before hybrids were picked back up by manufacturers and kinks were worked out.

But, the most interesting fact about all of this is that considering the history of hybrids, these cars were originally the vehicle of choice for most engineers. So, how could things have been different if hybrids had remained in the spotlight and not blotted out by Henry Ford?
