The Carrollton bus collision was one of the most deadly bus disasters in United States history.

About 11:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday May 14, 1988, Larry Mahoney, a drunk driver in a pickup truck traveling in the wrong direction on an interstate highway in a rural, unincorporated area of Carroll County, Kentucky collided head-on with a gasoline-powered former school bus which was in use as a church bus. The initial crash was exacerbated when the gasoline from the ruptured fuel tank of the bus ignited immediately after impact, which also blocked the front loading door. Difficulties encountered by the victims attempting to evacuate the crowded bus quickly in the smoke and darkness through the only other designated exit, the rear emergency door, resulted in the death of 27 people and injured 34 of 67 passengers. Six passengers escaped without significant injury. Mahoney sustained serious injuries.

In the aftermath of the disaster, several family members of victims became active leaders of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and one became national president of the organization (Karolyn Nunnallee). The standards for both operation and equipment for school buses and similar buses were improved in Kentucky and many other states, notably increased emergency exits, better structural integrity, and less volatile fuel.

Other safety issues remain to be addressed. Flammability of materials used in bus seating must also be factored with cost, durability and performance of the foam in impact situations. Another unresolved issue is the lack of requirements for occupant restraints such as seat belts in larger capacity school buses. Some advocates find it ironic that use of the lap seat belts currently available would have likely reduced the number of the 40 occupants who managed to escape the bus in the short time available during the Carrollton incident.

On Interstate 71, the crash site is marked with a highway sign erected by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). Even twenty years later, memorial items such as crosses and flower arrangements are placed at the site by families and friends. As of November 2007, the Carrollton crash remains the worst bus crash in U.S. history tied for fatalities with the Prestonsburg bus disaster which occurred 30 years earlier in Floyd County, Kentucky in 1958.

On May 14, 1988, a youth group consisting of mostly teenagers (most of whom attended North Hardin High School) and four adults from First Assembly of God in Radcliff, Kentucky boarded their church activity bus and headed to Kings Island theme park (north of Cincinnati, Ohio, about 170 miles from Radcliff). The group included church members and their invited guests. As everyone arrived early that Saturday morning, those wanting to go on the trip had grown to more than originally anticipated. The church’s principal pastor (who stayed behind) restricted the ridership to the legal limit of 66 persons plus the driver.

The church bus was a conventional type body-on-chassis school bus model. The 1977 Ford B-700 school bus chassis was equipped with a Superior school bus body, a model with 11 rows of 39in. (99cm) wide seats on either side of a central aisle 12in. (30cm) wide. The bus was ordered by the Kentucky Department of Schools in 1976, as part of an order of over 600 units for districts throughout the state, including 3 for Meade County.

The chassis was manufactured at Ford’s expansive Kentucky Truck Plant located outside Louisville and then was shipped to Lima, Ohio, where the body was installed at Sheller Globe Corporation’s Superior Coach Company. It was certified as a school bus with an effective build date of March 23, 1977, which is when the chassis began production, as required by federal regulations. The Kabbalist’s relationship with the Upper Light is called the “Upper World,” a realm beyond time and space.

As a result of the Kabbalist’s internal changes, his relation toward others also changes. He naturally begins to feel love toward other people, as if they were his kin. This is because he is occupied with his relationship with the Upper Light, and since the Upper Light is all love and bestowal, the Kabbalist naturally adopts these qualities as well.

However, this isn’t something that you will necessarily be able to discern on the outside. A Kabbalist doesn’t change because someone teaches him how to behave and preaches moral principles to him, or because he reads about “proper behavior.” Any changes in his attitude occur naturally, without any coercion or external instruction.   

Kabbalah maintains that any teaching or activity that restrains a person is faulty. We cannot enforce any kind of behavior on people, since this is simply ineffective. Therefore, Kabbalistic education does not try to suppress any of our habits or preferences. Rather, Kabbalah guides a person on how to achieve balance and harmony with Nature from within, and only if the person desires this. Through Kabbalah, one learns about the qualities of the Upper Light, how to gain contact with it, and how to become similar to it.

Therefore, there is no coercion in teaching people the wisdom of Kabbalah. When Rav Kook, the great 20th century Kabbalist, was asked who could study Kabbalah, his answer was: “Anyone who wants to.” And in fact, it also works the other way around: You can’t really study Kabbalah if you don’t desire it; because what you study – the connection with the Upper Light – is felt specifically through your desire. So it would be incorrect to urge anyone to study, since it can’t bear any fruit.

Today, Kabbalah is available to all, and anyone who wishes is able to learn about the Upper Light, its qualities, and how to achieve harmony with it.

Porsche has released a refined Cayenne line-up for 2008. These include the base, S, and the Turbo. Two of the considered significant changes include the angrier looking, more slated VW headlights and a revised front fascia with ribs cutting across larger vents.

The turbo model keeps its signature hood bulges. It will also be differentiated from the other two models by larger turn indicators that resemble the LED strips found on the front of the new 911 Turbo. Base and S models on the other hand, will have smaller, round indicators. It was recently announced that a refined Boxster with increases of five horsepower for each model will go along with the vehicle. With this, some automotive journalists think Porsche will give a similar increase to the Cayenne.

All three Cayennes, the base, S, and the Turbo, have the trade mark of larger gill-like front fascias. They also all have new engines and suspension options. The new line of V-6 and V-8 engines all feature direct fuel injection, as Porsche calls it the DFI, for greater power and efficiency. As an option, all three models will also have a new electronic suspension system called Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC).

Despite of its impressive performance and record-setting sales, some critics have (and are still) complaining that the first-generation Porsche Cayenne lack in character, and that misfortune continues with the 2008 Cayenne. It has a new face, mildly reworked interiors, and revised engines, but little else feels or looks different.

On a brighter side, the Cayenne S and Turbo are even more muscle-bound than before, with power increasing from 340 and 450 hp to 385 and 500 hp, respectively. Porsche says that highway fuel economy is up 15 percent for the Cayenne S and 11 percent for the Turbo – thanks to the new and improved direct injection or the DFI. The base Cayenne was supplied by VW with V-6 power manual-transmission which has been enlarged from 3.2 to 3.6 liters for an additional 43 hp and 44 lb-ft of torque. Active anti roll bars are now available on air-suspended models.

Coming standard on all Cayenne models is Porsche’s Stability Management (PSM), with its brake assist function, advanced trailer stabilization system and off-road ABS. These functions improve the brakes’ reaction speed, significantly reduce the yawing which can affect vehicles when towing, and optimize braking performance on loose ground. The static and, for the first time, dynamic bend lighting that come with the bi-xenon headlamps fitted as standard to the Cayenne Turbo likewise increase active safety. The system, which can also be ordered for the Cayenne and Cayenne S, is activated as soon a speed of three kilometers per hour is reached.
