PostHeaderIcon Toyota van service

Howard Thomas asked:

Toyota van servicing is now much cheaper, for those in the know.

Thanks to European legislation, you no longer have to be tied to high Toyota van service costs, dictated by your local dealer.

In October 2003 new European legislation affecting the motor industry came into force called “Block Exemption Regulation” 14002002 (BER), and this now means that you can book your next Toyota van service online and save up to 50% on what you might pay at your local Toyota van dealer.

Before the law changed it was difficult to have new vans within their warranty period serviced outside a franchised dealer. If you wanted to shop around for the best prices on Toyota van servicing, your hands were tied.

The change in the law now gives every van owner the freedom to service their van away from the main dealers, and still have their warranty protected.

Thousands of Toyota van owners have now taken advantage of their new right and reduced their Toyota van serving costs, whilst benefiting from the convenience of booking with national car service providers such as Service A Van.

Service A Van is a leading online van servicing network that prides itself on the quality of its Toyota van servicing, their customer service and transparent pricing. Because the company is not tied to any particular van manufacturer, they are able to service any make of vehicle and compete freely in the market, on a like-for-like.

Every vehicle is rigorously serviced according to the manufacturer’s servicing schedule, using genuine recommended parts fitted by qualified technicians. This means that every Toyota van service fulfils the warranty criteria and there is no compromise on the servicing standards of a main dealer.

Companies like Service A Van, who fulfil the warranty criteria when servicing your Toyota, are able to maintain your service book, just as main dealer can – thereby protecting your warranty and helping you to maximise the resale value of your Toyota van.

Of course, booking direct with a national car servicing network has its own advantages:

· You no longer have to do all the running around. Service A Van collects your Toyota in the morning and delivers it back that afternoon, free of charge

· You pay a fixed Toyota service price, which can be up to 50% below the price at the Toyota servicing desk of your local dealer

· No additional work is carried out without your agreement, which means no nasty surprises when it comes to paying the bill

· Trained Customer Advisers are on hand throughout the day to keep you informed of progress, and report back on problems you asked to be investigated as part of your Toyota service e.g. knocks and rattles

· You simply pay with your credit or debit card and your van is delivered back to your home or work address.

Our advice for saving money on Toyota van servicing is to contact a national car servicing network, who is not tied to any one particular van manufacturer, like Service A Van.

So, before you book your next Toyota van service, why not ask your local dealer to tell you the cost of the service (plus parts, oil and any extras) and then compare it with a fixed price quote from a national servicing network, like Service A Van?

Happy motoring,

Howard.

PostHeaderIcon How Volkswagen and Porsche Share Common Ties

gregchapman asked:

While many of us know that the Volkswagen Beetle Car originated in Germany and was produced as the “people’s car”, few know how its origins are tied in with Porsche. So what is the story, you ask?

It all started when Adolf ****** had a vision of his countrymen being able to own a cheap car and that they would use these cars to travel on great networks of roads called autobahns. At the same time, a man named Ferdinand Porsche had just set up an automotive design company, which became known as the Porsche Büro. The company patented a sophisticated independent front suspension system, which consisted of transversely mounted torsion bars connected to two trailing arms on each side. At the time, this was lighter than most other common types of suspension. In 1931, a German motorcycle company, Zündapp, asked Porsche if he could design a suitable car for them, this was followed by the design of a streamlined two-door sedan, which had lines similar to the Beetle. It was designated the Type 12.

Hitler saw Porsche’s work and invited him to submit a design for this peoples car with requirements that it had to be cheap, economical, fast (all of 60 miles per hour) and to accommodate two adults and three children comfortably. So, in January 1934 Porsche gave ****** a proposal for his car and by June that year work had begun.

While the idea of a people’s car wasn’t exactly a new one as before 1930 there were many attempts to design such a car, it wasn’t until Porsche that the concept was met.  Creating such a car was much more than design and engineering, it also required finding a way to create the car in a way that an average worker only had to spend his yearly wage to buy it.

The production of the car went well until World War II when manufacturing had to have a military twist. Believe it or not Volkswagen came up with a military version of the Beetle and they were called the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen. Porsche also at this time produced several designs for heavy tanks but lost out to Henschel & Son in both contracts that ultimately led to the Tiger I and the Tiger II. However, not all this work was wasted, as the chassis Porsche designed for the Tiger I was used as the base for the Elefant tank destroyer. Porsche also developed the Maus super-heavy tank in the closing stages of the war, producing two prototypes.

By 1945 the Volkswagen factory fell to the British and Porsche lost his position as Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen.  British Major Ivan Hirst was put in charge of the factory and Porsche was arrested for war crimes, but not tried. During his 20-month imprisonment, Ferdinand Porsche’s son, Ferry Porsche, decided to build his own car because he could not find an existing one that he wanted to buy. He also had to steer the company through some of its most difficult days until his father’s release in August 1947.

As time went by, both Volkswagen and Porsche car companies collaborated to make the VW-Porsche 914 and 914-6, whereby the 914-6 had a Porsche engine, and the 914 had a Volkswagen engine. In late 2005, Porsche took an 18.65% stake in the Volkswagen Group, further cementing their relationship, and preventing a takeover of Volkswagen, which was rumored at the time. Speculated suitors included DaimlerChrysler AG, BMW, and Renault.

On March 26, 2007, Porsche took its holding of Volkswagen shares to 30.9%, triggering a takeover bid under German law. On September 16, 2008, Porsche increased its shares by another 4.89%, in effect taking control of the company, with more than 35% of the voting rights. It again triggered a takeover bid, but this time over Audi.

While the history of a man named Porsche and a car called the Volkswagen have worked hand-in-hand, today each have their own unique meaning as well as their own unique looks.

PostHeaderIcon Toyota Truck Parts: Power in the Raw

Glady Reign asked:

Toyota Motor Corporation, one of the world’s largest automakers, first offered the Hilux truck in 1969. It was actually an enhanced version of the Stout, which was introduced earlier but did not receive enough attention and sales. As the Toyota Hilux provided better fuel mileage compared to its top competitor, the Ford F-250, it instantly became popular among car enthusiasts. After a series of many more improvements in the Toyota truck parts, with Motor Trend magazine awarding the Hilux as Truck of the Year in 1989, a variation of the renowned model was named Tacoma. The Trekker, which is the camper version of the Hilux, was changed to Toyota 4Runner in North America; it had similar aesthetic cues with the Tacoma. Toyota trucks dominated with their excellent engineering, tough body build, and outstanding styling.

Although the company was founded in Japan, it had bestselling vehicles not only in the United States but also in Europe. Toyota became recognized in its position even in Canada, Australia, and South Africa. The company now has a number of local factories where Toyota truck parts are manufactured and assembled into the different models it offers.

Having the capability of accomplishing tough tasks, the Toyota trucks have become immensely popular. The Tundra and Tacoma are presently the most famous among the brand’s many truck variants. Like the Hilux, Tacoma has the usual off-road capability, which is matched with excellent handling quality and an exceptionally comfortable cabin. The Toyota truck parts of the Tundra, meanwhile, are assembled to exhibit remarkable agility and particularly smooth, quiet, and refined road manners. Tagged as “the indestructible car,” the Toyota Hilux was featured in the popular television show Top Gear where it was subjected to extraordinary abuse that involved intentional crashing, scraping, weather exposure, and hitting with a wrecking ball. With basic repair that did not included any component replacement, the Hilux survived. This is the ultimate proof of Toyota’s high standards of quality, reliability, and durability.

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai to Unveil I-blue at the Frankfurt

Evander Klum asked:

Hyundai, producer of quality Hyundai catalytic converter will unveil a fuel-cell electric concept vehicle at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. This is in connection with the company’s commitment to develop eco-friendly mode of transportation.

This hydrogen-powered, zero-emission i-Blue fuel cell electric vehicle was created at Hyundai’s Design and Technical Center in Chiba, Japan and based on Hyundai’s third-generation fuel-cell technology that is being developed at the company’s Eco-Technology Research Institute in Korea.

According to Hyundai, the introduction of the i-Blue signals the big move towards the marketing of Hyundai fuel-cell vehicles. The past test vehicles were built on SUV platforms but not the i-Blue which has its very own D-segment 2+2 crossover utility vehicle body.

Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of Hyundai Research and Development said as quoted by motoring.co.za: “The i-Blue is the first Hyundai designed from the ground up to incorporate fuel-cell technology. We have achieved a more compact fuel-cell vehicle that still has the safety, comfort, convenience, and driving range of a conventional vehicle.”

Hyundai also plans of mass producing hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles in the future.

In other news, this time on Hyundai’s subsidiary in Beijing—Hyundai Motor’s Chinese joint venture has announced last Monday that it will cut down the prices of its three models namely the Elantra, EF Sonata and Accent.

The price of the Elantra will go down by 14,000 to 15,000 yuan or around W1.74 million to W1.86 million. The EF Sonata will also go down by 16,000 yuan or W2 million while the Accent will have a drop in price by 5,000 to 8,100 yuan. After dropping out of China’s top ten sales ranking last May, Hyundai has tried to win back consumers by offering incentive packages. And currently, it has decided to remove the incentives and replace them with discounts.

The incentives that were previously offered by Hyundai Motor are equivalent to a seven or eight percent markdown while the price cuts range from eight to fourteen percent.

Hyundai has been facing fierce competition in China with other automakers putting pressure on the Korean automaker to slash prices. And with other automakers, Hyundai is referring to Shanghai GM which has dropped its prices by 8.3 to 8.4 percent, FAW Volkswagen which has cut prices by 6.2 to 6.3 percent, Shanghai Volkswagen by 10 to 11.1 percent and Dongfeng Nissan which has offered discount of 8.3 to 9.8 percent.

In order to become competitive Hyundai has also cut its prices and now the company will have to workout on how to improve its cost structure.

PostHeaderIcon Annapolis Subaru: Auto Dealership’s Paradox

Anthony Fontanelle asked:

Some bemoan that the retail auto business is increasingly difficult, yet one local dealer consistently serves customers from throughout the United States – Subaru Annapolis, reported the Examiner.

While other auto dealerships complain about sales doldrums, one retail business is singing a different tune. Amid tight competition and rising gasoline prices, the Subaru dealership is still booming. What is the secret behind?

Annapolis Subaru General Sales Manager Chris Kelly shared some of the tidbits and philosophies that have pushed the continuous growth of the dealership and earned it high customer satisfaction ratings.

Asked sets Annapolis Subaru apart from its competitors, Kelly has this to say: “It’s interesting you should ask that because I was just discussing that with the staff. The only thing that sets us apart is how we treat our customers. We take great pride in the no-pressure environment at our dealership.”

How does the dealership maintain a no-pressure sales environment? “That is where our staff comes in. Historically, we have not hired car salespeople. We hire good people and we train them in our way of doing business. I did recently hire two people who had previously worked at car dealerships. That is more the exception than the rule,” Kelly said.

“A Subaru has a lot of unique characteristics. It is the only manufacturer where every single model they build has highest safety rating,” he added. “Every Subaru also has the ‘Boxer Engine’ design which provides a very low center of gravity, and hence the exceptional handling characteristic. The reliability is also very high. Consumer Reports and other agencies consistently rank Subaru, Honda and Toyota as among the most reliable.”

The dealership has established a good following because it does not only ensure the quality of the Subaru brake caliper but the vehicle’s entirety. The service is not limited to quality, the dealership believes, a business should create an atmosphere of friendliness and reliability to keep customers coming.

“We actually reach out well beyond that to the surrounding areas and beyond. We sell cars even to those in the western states,” Kelly noted. “We have customers in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas and Florida. Even on Caribbean Islands and Canada.”

Basically, the thing about the dealership is viral marketing. And the best channel is no less than word of mouth. “People who buy Subarus are very particular about their cars. They understand when a dealer speaks their language and will honestly answer their questions. We appreciate their knowledge and we cater to those customers,” said Kelly.

“You’ll see in our scores that we have some of the highest customer satisfaction scores possible. That’s because we really listen to our customers and treat them with respect. The Web has also been a significant factor in enabling us to expand beyond our local market,” Kelly concluded.

Viral marketing has contributed to the dealership’s exponential growth. Despite the surrounding dilemmas in the auto industry, Subaru Annapolis could not help but grow…. and grow some more.

Subaru, meanwhile, is a Japanese automaker and a division of Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. The name originated from the Japanese language meaning “unite”. It is also the term for the constellation known in the west as the Pleiades. The current Subaru emblem, however, symbolizes the present company structure to deviate from the original star cluster image; it was known in the past.

While smaller than many of its rivals in the industry, Subaru has been a highly lucrative company for many years. It is famed for the production of traditional-bodied cars with full-time AWD as well as the exceptional boxer engines.

PostHeaderIcon Mitsubishi Outlander Versus Toyota Rav4

James Russell asked:

Two Japanese car models are terrific rivals in the market today. These are the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS 4WD whose price is $28,815 and the 2007 Toyota RAV4 4×4 whose price is $23,574.

According to the news, the redesigned 2007 Outlander is a make-or-break product for troubled Japanese automaker Mitsubishi. The midsize crossover vehicle hits the U.S. market with new competitors Mazda CX-7 and Ford Edge.

But one of the most potent rivals of the Outlander is the Toyota RAV4, which was redesigned last year.

Both offer optional third-row seating and can be ordered in either front- or four-wheel drive.

In comparison with Toyota RAV4, the Outlander’s exterior is refined and larger in size. The exterior shape looks fresh modern, and stylish. On the tail, the rear three-quarter view is generic and clunky, with massive rear pillars and a narrow rear window that tends to restrict vision.

Toyota offers a much more contemporary shape in the RAV4, far more stylish than the Outlander. This is quite an accomplishment for Toyota, considering the previous RAV was one of the original “cute utes,” while the latest iteration is considerably larger and more grown up.

Inside the cabin, both cars have excessive fake-metal gray plastic. But Mitsubishi’s instrument panel is a mixture of mismatched parts and materials that according to a press release is “a virtual jigsaw puzzle that cheapens the overall ambience of the cabin”.

The Outlander, with its $1,600 luxury package, has leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat, while the RAV4 makes do with manual, cloth-covered chairs.

The RAV4 has two rows of seats. The second row ca be reclined and be adjusted for additional leg space, and the split folding seatbacks flip down at the pull of a lever on either side of the cargo bay. There is an ample under floor storage bin in the rear.

The RAV4′s controls and displays are simple and easy to comprehend. Materials are of high quality, although some pieces do not fit as snugly as people come to expect from Toyota.

The Outlander’s front seats are comfy and supportive. There is less space in the second row, and there have no many amenities for occupants back there. The rear center armrest lacks a pull strap, and while the tiny third-row folds neatly into the floor that it looks cheap and flimsy and is a chore to use.

The Outlander has some nice touches, including steering-wheel controls and simple rotary dials for the HVAC controls. But there are some questionable designs and engineering choices, too. For instance, the switches for the heated seats are stuffed between the inner seat edges and the center console.

When it comes to safety, both vehicles come fully configured in terms of occupant safety systems with standard antilock brakes, traction and stability control, side air bags for front-seat occupants, and side curtains for the first and second rows.

Next: the power train. Even the base Outlander comes with a standard overhead-cam 3.0-liter V-6, there is no four-cylinder version. The RAV4, in comparison, is equipped with a standard twin-cam 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, with a DOHC 3.5-liter V-6, which is available as an option.

The Outlander has the V-6 and a six-speed automatic transmission, while the four-cylinder RAV4 comes with a four-speed automatic. The Mitsubishi V-6 is rated at 220 horsepower, and the EPA fuel-economy numbers are not too shabby, at 19 miles per gallon in city driving and 26 on the highway.

The RAV4′s base configuration is rated by the EPA at 23 in the city and 27 on the highway. The optional V-6 is considerably more potent than the one in the Outlander, delivering a whopping 269 horsepower; it comes with a five-speed automatic.

Both cars display the supple car-like ride that is typical among crossovers. The Outlander rides on 18-inch wheels and tires, while the RAV4 comes with optional 17-inch wheels and tires. Further comparison by car enthusiasts between the Mitsubishi and the Toyota outer tie rod end is also needed to comprehend which steering control is safer on the road.

Both cars are relatively easy to maneuver and park, and while they don’t exactly feel like sports cars, they are fairly nimble and responsive.
